Start with the exact symptom
“Not detected” can describe four different failures. Choose the row that matches what you can actually observe.

Do not reinstall the Blu-ray player until you know which layer failed. A player cannot select a drive that the operating system does not see.
1. Isolate power, cable, and port
Shut down any player that is using the drive, eject the disc if possible, and reconnect the drive using the cable supplied for that model. During diagnosis:
- connect directly to the computer instead of an unpowered hub or dock;
- try another known-working data port;
- connect any required second USB power plug or AC adapter exactly as the drive manual specifies;
- remove a USB-C adapter from the path if the drive has a direct compatible connection; and
- listen for repeated spin-up and power-down cycles, then record what happens.
A cable can provide power without providing a reliable data connection. A lit LED therefore does not prove that Windows or macOS has enumerated the device.
If the drive has no power on more than one supported port and computer, stop before making software changes. Record the model, cable, power arrangement, and result for the manufacturer or seller.
2. Check Windows before the player
On Windows 11, look in both File Explorer and Device Manager → DVD/CD-ROM drives. Also check whether an unknown device or warning icon appears after reconnecting the drive.
Use this order:
- Restart Windows with the drive disconnected, then connect it after sign-in.
- Recheck Device Manager and note the exact device name or error code.
- Use Windows Update and the computer or drive manufacturer’s support page for the current supported driver or firmware information.
- If the drive is listed but remains unusable, Microsoft’s current optical-drive guide includes uninstalling the device from Device Manager and restarting so Windows installs the device again.
The Microsoft step is a later operating-system repair, not the first response to a loose cable or insufficient power. Do not start with registry scripts, generic “driver updater” utilities, or firmware intended for a different drive model.
If the drive returns after a restart but disappears during disc access, repeat the test with a direct port and the correct power arrangement before blaming the player.
3. Check the connected hardware on Mac
On macOS, use System Information to see whether the Mac recognizes the connected USB hardware. Apple also documents a system view for devices connected to the Mac. The exact menu wording can vary by macOS release, so the important observation is whether the drive appears at the system level.
- If the drive is absent, simplify the cable, adapter, hub, and power path.
- If the USB device appears but no disc mounts, move to a known-good disc test.
- If the disc appears to macOS but not the player, move to the player layer.
Apple’s own optical-disc guide covers CDs and DVDs, not a built-in Blu-ray movie workflow. A Mac still needs a Blu-ray-capable drive and compatible third-party player for a physical Blu-ray movie.
4. Separate drive detection from disc reading
Once the operating system shows the drive, test media one format at a time.
- Try a known-good supported DVD if the drive reads DVD.
- Try a known-good standard Blu-ray.
- Try the original problem disc again.
- Record whether each disc is detected, spins, mounts, or produces an error.
The results narrow the problem:
- DVD and Blu-ray both fail: connection, power, or the drive itself remains the leading branch.
- DVD works but standard Blu-ray fails: confirm that the model actually reads Blu-ray and test another known-good standard Blu-ray.
- Only one disc fails: inspect that disc and test it in another known-compatible player if available.
- Standard Blu-ray works but UHD fails: do not infer that a standard Blu-ray reader supports Ultra HD Blu-ray.
Reading a DVD proves only that part of the optical path works. It does not prove standard Blu-ray or UHD capability.
5. Check the player only after the OS and disc
Open one player from its official source and select the optical drive or disc that the operating system already exposes. Then record the exact error rather than changing several settings.
- If the player cannot list a visible drive, check its current OS and source-type support.
- If the disc opens but the movie does not play, use the Blu-ray will not play checklist.
- If Windows 11 is the target setup, verify the complete Windows 11 Blu-ray path.
- If the device is attached to a Mac, verify the Mac Blu-ray hardware and software path.
Repeatedly reinstalling the same player is not evidence that the drive, cable, disc, or operating system is healthy.
When to contact support, return, or replace the drive
Prepare a short test record before contacting the drive manufacturer or seller:
- drive model and serial number if requested;
- computer model and operating system version;
- supplied cable, port, adapter, hub, and power arrangement;
- whether the drive appears in Device Manager or System Information;
- which known-good DVD and standard Blu-ray tests passed or failed; and
- the exact error code or behavior.
Return or hardware service becomes reasonable when the drive fails to power or enumerate on multiple supported computers with the correct cable and power, or when several known-good supported discs fail consistently after the operating system sees the device.
Stop before any proposed repair that requires an unrelated firmware image, protection bypass, copied disc keys, or a generic registry-cleaning script. Those steps do not belong in a safe model-specific hardware diagnosis.
